Larry Smith is a retired lieutenant from the San Diego Police Department (CA).  He has 34 years police experience and 50 years of college level teaching experience.  He served as a field-training officer and an in-service training coordinator for the department and was the lead Arrest and Control Instructor at the San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Academy.

He wrote three textbooks on police tactics and manages instructor training programs for Aerosol Weapon OC Training, Techniques and Tactics for Handcuffing and Compliance and Control Holds.  For the past ten years he was chosen to present at the annual ILEETA Conference.

He has many certifications in baton, defensive tactics, verbal judo, instructor development and chemical agents.  He is a third degree black belt Aikido practitioner and frequently lectures on police use-of-force.  He is judicially recognized as an expert witness about police procedures and use of force issues.  The California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) licensed Larry to certify security officers to carry either the straight or side handle baton.

Larry is a certified International Instructor by the Monadnock Police Training Council, former Vice Chair of the American Society for Law Enforcement Training (ASLET) and a member of the advisory Board for the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA).  He was awarded a Management Certificate by California POST, has a lifetime California vocational teaching credential and taught POST Certified Instructor Courses in California while on the staff at Miramar, Palomar and Southwestern  Colleges.

In July 2003, he was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Mo.  He was recognized as the “Outstanding Law Enforcement Trainer of the Year.”  Larry was inducted into the Monadnock Hall of Fame for his dedicated service and commitment on September 2008.  In August 2009 he was inducted in the Masters Hall of Fame in Long Beach, CA. In 2015 he was acknowledged at the ILEET Conference for 50 years as a trainer.

Recommendation: Larry Smith is in the upper tier law enforcement of law enforcement trainers. His extensive skill coupled with his interpersonal communication ability demonstrates his instructional mastery. Anyone who is trained Larry is amazed at what he offers.  I have learned more about being an instructor from Larry than anyone else. I highly recommend Larry Smith.
